Growing up with a mother who was interested in nutrition meant that this interest rubbed off on me. I started taking a more active interest when I was 19. Over the years I had lived with stomach cramps, bowel problems and constantly feeling bloated. I put myself on a food trial to establish whether my nutrition was the cause, as nothing else made sense. My research led to IBS, for which most doctors prescribed a pill. As IBS is a digestive problem, I wanted to investigate a potential nutrition link.
Over a few months I eliminated dairy, wheat, sugar, spices and processed foods, and analysed how my body reacted. I felt better without dairy, wheat and sugar so I cut those out. My body revolted initially, and symptoms worsened before they improved, but now I live easily without these.
A few years later, in my twenties, some bowel issues arose. Because of our family history with colon cancer, I visited a specialist. The issues were work stress-related, but I was officially diagnosed with IBS. The specialist prescribed a pill. I asked why I needed a pill when I had been successfully controlling my IBS with nutrition. He had no logical answer. This experience has made me aware of the importance of listening to my body. I now frequently change my diet with how my body feels.
As a child, I was very active. I played tennis, did gymnastics and ran at weekends. In my mid-twenties, I took a more active interest in improving my lifestyle. I took up Powerlifting, Olympic Lifting and Strongman training. Following arthroscopies on both shoulders and both hips between October 2014 and March 2015, I switched my high impact training for Bodybuilding. In November 2015, I was able to return to Powerlifting and Strongman training. It is unlikely that I will be able to resume Olympic lifting. During my operation recoveries, I relied on nutrition to ensure that I didn’t lose too much muscle mass and remained healthy. I exercised according to my body’s capabilities. I had fairly easy recoveries thanks to my healthy lifestyle before the operations.
I have come to love nutrition and training. You wouldn’t give a car dirty petrol, knowing that it would eventually break down. The body is the same. We can’t feed ourselves food we know is bad for us, maintain a predominantly sedentary life, and still expect our bodies to perform.
